I am leery to whether I would find RSS reader worth my time. I can see the relevance for current events for social studies or keeping up with research developments in science. Teaching high school art everyday at my somewhat small school with limited space, computers, and funds, I don't think setting up Wiki's would be practical. At the college level I can see the benefits. Maybe someday when I no longer teach and my children are grown and I am creating lots of art, a wiki would help me connect to other artists around the world.

I feel I have come to the point that I am finished with my Surveying Emerging Technologies online class. As I evaluate what I have learned and accomplished from this one credit course, I can honestly say I have grown immensely in personal knowledge on the scope and amazing ever changing technologies. In one month of time, my attitude has drastically changed and I am more open and paying closer attention to technologies that I once ignored.
If I had to put a letter grade on my effort and time invested, it would be a solid A. However, my completion of various tasks required in this course, I was not as proficient. I had trouble posting comments in the correct places and was overwhelmed and confused with my blog and its whereabouts. Looking back at the course work and reading, I learned a great deal considering I am not an avid surfing, blogging internet user. In the past I mainly use the computer for grades, word processing, adobe photo-shop, email and googling for quick information. Prior to this class I had never heard of or either paid attention to the following words; web 2.0, tagging, RSS feed, Greasemonkey, delicious, social bookmarking, plugin, URL, Blogger, Wet Paint, Google Reader and aggregators. I see the value of many of these applications in education, but some more so for different subject area and levels. As an art teacher I will take away from this experience the possible use of Flickr and Slide Share. I am already using delicious and embracing it. With my personality, life style and job, I do not think blogging is my cup of tea. I am not compelled to share personal information or ideas through the written word. I express myself much better through my artwork and demonstrating to students. I don't mind reading other people's blogs if I have the time. |
